Motors & generators for the electrified future
A key technology to accelerate the green energy transition
Hagnesias lightweight motors and generators will unlock technology leaps in renewable power production and zero-emission transportation thanks to three primary benefits compared to current state of the art drivetrain technologies:
- Much smaller in size.
- Significantly lower mass.
- Higher drivetrain efficiency.
On an electric vehicle with a given range these factors mean more payload capacity, smaller (cheaper) battery and lower total vehicle mass.
For an electricity generation system it means lower total system mass, more simple and cheaper logistics and a higher accumulated energy production over the economic lifetime of the system.
A new paradigm of resource efficiency
Setting a new paradigm for cost efficiency
A Hagnesia motor or generator is built from conventional materials but with a novel and patented electromagnetic layout. This unique layout enables a modular and extremely material efficient, a.k.a. resource efficient, machine.
The resource efficiency benefit of the Hagnesia machines is highest when compared to low speed direct drive motors and generators. Here it is typical for a Hagnesia motor or generator to end up being around 10x more resource efficient.
In practice 10x more resource efficiency means that from the raw material needed to build 1 conventional motor or generator one can build up to 10 equivalent Hagnesia machines.
Paradigm shifting resource efficiency is the key to paradigm shifting cost efficiency.
A new paradigm of resource efficiency
Minimizing critical raw material reliance & supply chain risk
The technology sector that enables efficient electrification of the energy and transport sector, such as wind power and electric vehicles, is highlighted as particularly important by the EU.
This is because the supply of critical raw materials (CRMs) as well as key sub-systems and components for this sector are concentrated to only a few countries and geopolitical actors that are not necessarily under the sphere of influence of the EU. Naturally this poses a great geopolitical and supply chain risk to the EU.
By reducing reliance on such critical raw materials by up to 90% the Hagnesia technology will help de-risk and accelerate the green energy transition while increasing the geopolitical independence of the EU.
A new paradigm of resource efficiency
Enabling electrification in transportation
Electrification is the key to building a more sustainable transportation system. This will require efficient, compact and lightweight drivetrains. Conventional electric motors struggle to deliver on this for the low-speed RPMs typically needed for transportation (such as a ship propellers or wheel axis). This is why electric vehicle drivetrains often incorporate a gearbox. Adding gearbox means adding both weight, losses and complexity to the drivetrain.
A Hagnesia direct drive motor enables an efficient and compact solution that can save both space and weight while increasing drivetrain efficiency. This adds up to increased range for a given battery or energy storage size as well as increased payload capacity and overall better unit economics.
Projects
We are builders at the forefront of technology
Action always speaks louder than words. For us that means focusing a very large part of our efforts and resources on building actual machines as well as production and test capacity. We are doing this systematically in order to prove the technology and its “product market fit”, scalability and overall quality in projects of ever increasing complexity and scale.
Some of our projects are internal, but a vast majority of our projects are conducted in tight collaborations with industry leaders, early adopter customers and world class research institutes and academic organizations.
